Instrumentation: Flute, Bb Clarinet, and Piano (yarn mallet required) Duration: 10 Minutes
This work was inspired by a dream of two statues: a small golden monkey statue, and a towering turquoise statue of meditating figure. The first movement clashes dissonant piano clusters with lyrical, almost comical lines in the flute and clarinet, forming a parody of the terrifying statue motif from Messiaen's Turangalila Symphonie. The second movement uses the booming resonance of the piano in coodination with complete chromaticism to create a "mist" of sound over which the flute and clarinet provide more peaceful melodic lines.
