Instrumentation: Bassoon, Piano Also arranged for Viola and Piano Duration: 10 Minutes
Inspired by the scenes of the Sequoia National Forest, this suite for Bassoon and Piano recreates the flora and fauna through melodic and rhythmic devices. In the first movement, a weary traveller approaches the forest in the early morning, humming a tune to himself and gazing up at the wonderous trees as dawn slowly approaches. The second movement follows the flight of eagles through the skies above the forest, calling out to each other. By midday, the lumbering protector of the forest, the bear, awakens in the third movement. The fox of the fourth movement seeks out food, but the hares of the final movement are too quick, and quickly make their escape.
