Instrumentation: Flute, Percussion (2 Suspended Cymbals (or 1 Suspended and one China Cymbal), Bass Bow, 2 Bongos, 4 Metal Cans, Egg Shaker) Duration: 8 Minutes
Four Tones was written for the Inland Valley musicians and first performed by the Firebird Ensemble during their residence at Chapman University. The work was subsequently performed by the Chapman New Music Ensemble during the same year.
The piece is grounded in simplicity--the use of two performers, limited to each four notes (flute) or types of instruments (percussion) and very little forward rhythmic motion. Each of the four larger structural movements presents a motion towards complexity, then an ultimate return to stasis.
